Copyright protects “original works of authorship” which are creative works such as: musical works (lyrics, composition), sound recordings, literary works (e.g. books), dramatic works (plays, musicals), choreographic works (dance), pictorial, graphic or sculptural works (photos, drawings, even tattoos), audiovisual works (videos, TV shows, movies), and architectural works.
For music, a single work may have multiple separate copyright owners – the authors or owners of the musical work (the underlying lyrics and composition), as well as the owner of the sound recording (the track as recorded).
Copyright does not protect ideas, facts, processes, inventions, common symbols, or short phrases/slogans - although some of these may be protected by other laws.
