What is Spotify's artificial streaming penalty fee?
Spotify introduced a new deterrent to combat artificial streaming, effective April 1, 2024, charging labels and distributors per track when flagrant artificial streaming is detected on their content.
You can read what Spotify has to say about this new policy here.
As a reminder, artificial streaming violates UnitedMasters' Terms of Service. With the new Spotify policy, any fees Spotify charges to UnitedMasters in connection with your tracks will be passed along to you because of the content you delivered. Those fees will be withdrawn from your Wallet balance and may result in the removal of your tracks.
If Spotify has not detected flagrant artificial streaming on your tracks, these fees will not affect you!
So, we strongly encourage you to take steps to keep your music safe on streaming platforms, including:
- Do not use promotion services offering guaranteed streams, followers, or playlist placements.
- Do not play your music on a loop for extended periods (and discourage collaborators and fans from doing this).
- Monitor streaming activity for your music (using the data in your UnitedMasters account, platforms like Apple Music for Artists and Spotify for Artists, and tools like this one) and immediately contact fraudprevention@unitedmasters.com if you notice anything unusual.
- Make sure to only submit to legitimate playlists.
Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

How will I know if I have received an artificial streaming penalty fee?
If Spotify charges UnitedMasters for flagrant artificial streaming detected on one or more of your tracks, you will see a negative dollar ($) transaction in your Wallet with the label "Spotify Artificial Streaming Penalty Fee."
This transaction will amount to the USD equivalent of EUR 10 (around $10.70, as of June 28, 2024) for each track that generated a fee.
For example, if Spotify charged UnitedMasters for flagrant artificial streaming on three of your tracks, you would see a transaction for the USD equivalent of €-30 the next time we posted royalties.
