How does something get trademark protection? Should I register my band or artist name as a trademark?

In the US, trademark rights are established through first use in commerce (offering your goods and services in the public). 

Registering your trademark with the USPTO grants additional protections. However, this can be a lengthy and expensive process, and you can start it once your artist/band name or work has gained some traction.
